Let Me Draw Your Memories

I like to hear peoples stories, to have an small insight into their lives. What interests you about Albert Drive? What memories do you have of the area? When I hear peoples stories I try to imagine what the place/people/event looked like. A photograph can’t capture an image from the imagination so the only other thing to do is draw. I asked people to tell me a story or for something they find iconic about the drive that they would like me to draw.
To meet my neighbours I had to find a way to engage and interest people. This is how I met my neighbours:
1. Make a temporary home on the street complete with ‘couch’, cushions and chalk ‘WELCOME’ mat.
2. Hang a sign on the wall behind the couch saying ‘I’m Trying To Meet My Neighbours’.
3. Get out pens, pencils and 2 sketchbooks (1 for myself and 1 for anyone else who might want to join me) to draw on.
4. Get as warm and comfortable as possible – layers are a must!
5. Draw iconic things on the street and hang them on the wall.
6. Say hello to people passing and strike up conversation. Tell them what I’m doing and ask for their stories/images they would like me to draw.
7. Put these drawings up on the wall with the others.
8. Repeat the process until the wall is populated with drawings!
