The Community Scarf.

I am a knitter. And when I think about community, I think about interwoven people, held together by the place that they live. Tied, knitted into one another. Whether you have met these people or not, they become a part of your life. Inextricably tied up in the lives of others.

I bought:
7mm needles
White Yarn (90% Acrylic, 10% Wool)
Bias Binding (which, due to lack of materials, became pillowcase fabric).

I drew my small chalk square on the Railway Bridge, set up my comfy chair, kept an apple in my pocket for later, cast on approximately 40 stitches, and began to knit (Garter Stitch, because it is easy, quick and does not curl up around the edge when finished)

I first met Junar. Junar lives near Albert Drive. She was the first person to say “What are you doing?” She returned later with her two children, asking for their names to be put into the scarf. I met a dog called Leo who took an interest in my backpack, sticking his nose into my notebooks and pens. I met Parveen, whose name means “unique star”. I met Alina, who made me laugh alot.

I am making my own Albert Drive. I hope to keep on knitting my scarf. I hope it becomes 6 feet long with the people that I meet. I hope that people will find themselves in it, see people they know, maybe even see the people that they don’t know they love yet.

If you see me, tell me your name, look and touch the scarf that I am making. Make it yours as it is only partly mine.

I am trying to meet my neighbours.
I have met 73 of you so far.
